Detroit native Susie Schechter is Reading Works’ first Executive Director. Joining the emerging organization in September 2011.
After twelve years of experience in employment litigation with law firms, including Butzel Long, Dickinson Wright and Vercruysse, Metz & Calzone, Schechter has made a career of community service. Prior to joining Reading Works, she spent four years with the American Lung Association of Michigan. As the Director of Advocacy, Schechter worked to decrease tobacco use, especially amongst youth, through policy change at the local, state and national level. During her tenure, Michigan’s “smoke free law” was passed that prohibits smoking in most indoor spaces.
Schechter is a current board member of the Jewish Fund and serves on the Israel Oversees Committee for the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Detroit. She has also been involved for many years with Building Better Families Through Action, a nonprofit charged with raising healthy, drug-free children through parent education.
Schechter spent most of her childhood in Flint, Michigan. She earned her Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Michigan where she majored in psychology, and is a graduate of Duke University School of Law. She lives in Bloomfield Hills with her three children and husband, Marc.
